ASIA'S PR PRINCESS

I'm in the process of updating the Mr Gay HK media kit for 2013-2014. It's mostly tedious - re-looking at numbers, lay-out, new success stories, trends to watch out for, etc, etc - all in the name of grabbing potential brand partners by the balls and shaking them from side-to-side, until they relent and sign over precious sponsorship dollars for me to see my pet project through another year.

2013 is Mr Gay HK, Year 5.

I'm having a bit of a moment, reminiscing about what has been the past four years. How stories were created, how they were shaped, where I found fertile ground to plant the seeds of a campaign, and then watch it grow and intensify...

I used to enjoy this. I was really good at it, too. It's incredible, looking back at what you've done and realizing that you've accomplished some super-fucking-human feats. If I had met myself five years ago, I would have said:

Holy shit, princess - where'd you find time to get all of these done, plus manage a social persona, maintain friendships and a meaningful relationship with Chris, keep in constant touch with family, do drag, and blog??!

I was of course a lot more persistent when I was younger. These days, I wouldn't deem waste anybody's time. I'd move on as soon as I hear a No, because, I tell myself, it's not the end of the world. There are other things in life which will be a Yes, and they're just straight ahead, so keep on walking! But looking back at what I've been able to accomplish, armed with nothing more than youth and persistence and naivete, I'd say:

You fucking wore people out with your enthusiasm, until they just said Yes so you would go away!

I would have liked to be friends with that guy - that penniless, Hyperactive gay boy. He made things happen without knowing, fully, how he made them happen. He simply jumped into the deep end - and he'd ask questions later. But only if he absolutely had to. He was self sufficient and independent and driven and bullheaded and positive.

He was happy and energetic.

He was free.

Sometimes we need to force ourselves to look back, to inspire ourselves in the present, for what we need to get done tomorrow. That's just what happened to me.

POST-SCRIPT

Looking back on it, pondering, writing about it and congratulating yourself isn't enough. Pause for a moment and thank the universe for always making sure you see the redemption after every conflict she throws at you.

-Ryeness

EVERY . SINGLE . TIME.

Anybody who knows me, knows my appetite - perhaps none better than FINDS' Executive Chef Jaakko Sorsa, himself. Jaakko is a dear friend who has generously fed me on my countless moments of desperate hunger. That's, like, every day. Five times a day. I was FINDS' Marketing & PR Manager over three years. The amount of food I've enjoyed from Jaakko's benevolence would have been enough to feed a small village throughout a season of catastrophic drought. Because of this, the mere sight of Jaakko sends my dopamine levels shooting through the roof. Jaakko's smiling face is a neurotransmitter that tells me I won't simply be eating; I'm going to feast. Therefore, I'm a terrible critic when it comes to Jaakko's food.

I am not a real food critic, either. I'm just a food addict. That's why I got myself a job in a restaurant, in the first place. And so while real crits may pause thoughtfully between mouthfuls to consider taste, texture, portion and presentation, I'm too busy either shoveling entire platefuls down my esophagus or wondering when the next dish is arriving.

That having been said, I have seen how Jaakko's food has evolved and matured to a point where he's serving up complex Northern European dishes as though they were chapters in a whimsical Nordic fairy tale.

"This could have gotten so old, so quickly," I whispered to Adele Wong, HK Mag's dining and lifestyle editor. "I usually think food that requires an introduction - or a set of instructions on how to eat, much less! - is too pretentious for me to eat. I'd rather die from hunger than order a dish whose name I can't pronounce. Just sayin'."

OK, so that last line was a total lie. I'd eat anything. Besides - let's be honest - who knows a lot about Nordic gastronomic tradition, anyway? Not me. And as iconic as FINDS is - its 10th anniversary comes up in spring 2014 - it's not exactly propped up by a cottage industry of Nordic product and service providers that all together help to educate an entire populace. Aside from FINDS, the only other Nordic brands I have relationships with are H&M and Ikea.

Nordic Express is a 12-course magnum opus through Finland, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Lapland. The menu is presented with an illustrated map featuring with a "pin drop" on where dishes on the menu come from. Jaakko then introduces each dish with a story - about the ingredients, about the fishermen, about a country's history and culture - often, personal. The rowanberry jelly that comes with wild game pate was made just 10 days prior to our meal, by Jaakko and his mom.

The food is delicious.

The style - eye-popping, whimsical, fresh, enjoyable, incredible. Nordic topography comes alive on the table, with rocks, branches of birch, moss and herbs so supple, they might as well have been picked from Jaakko's garden mere minutes before they were served.

I've never experienced anything like it before.

I know FINDS intimately; I helped shape (rescue?) it. It has had its moments of identity crises. That tends to happen when a brand starts off with three (!!!) managing directors, a very strong general manager, and a genius in the kitchen. Who prevails, and when?

Nordic Express is the journey we've been waiting for all this time. It has just the one train driver. His name is Jaakko.

It has taken almost a decade to get here.

And it's worth the wait.

FINDS is back.

THE J BRIDGE CROSSING

 photo 1016439_10100991059166459_1557873197_n_zps6571cca7.jpg
WHO IS J BRIDGE -
AND WHAT EXACTLY DOES 'J' STAND FOR?

ph. HEIHEI YAU

The shoes were funny (category: weird). I felt like I was walking in high heels - except the heels were down the front. These "heels," I would later find out, were designed to secure me onto a bike. I will not fall off. Rather, it is hoped I wouldn't. And in case I did, I would surely take the bike crashing down with me.

"This is perhaps the trickiest part," grunted one of the trainers after helping me hoist myself up onto the saddle. "It's a bit of a learning curve, clipping your shoes to the pedals."

I slid my right foot back and forth, forth and back along the right pedal - nothing. It felt like rubbing the surfaces of two, smooth rocks against each other. After what seemed like an eternity, I heard an onerous "click!"

"Hear that click?" the trainer beamed. "Now, do the other side," he instructed. He then left to let me figure things out on my own while he helped other people click themselves in. "Click!" - my left shoe went, sending chills from my ankles, all the way up to my calves and thighs. That sound had the crystal-clear finality of handcuffs clicking on to the wrists of a law offender.

I am a health offender.

I eat too much, whenever. There's no rhythm to my feeding schedule; why would there be? I have abused my body far too long. I ate and drank years of my life away without offsetting my mind-boggling calorie intake with a reasonable amount of exercise. Exercise is painful, I reasoned. Why would I, as a reasonable adult, willingly subject myself to pain?

Until J Bridge came along.

Bridge is a dear friend and my personal trainer.

I first knew him as a candidate for Mr Gay HK 2012. He finished in second place, promptly flooding my phone with emotional messages. If I was impressed with how quickly he sculpted his body into competition ready-ness (he is either criminally disciplined, or just genetically better than 99.9% of humanity), I was even more impressed by his unbridled unmasking of pretentious civility. He was hurt and confused and angry and in denial and dammit, he had to make sure I knew it, too!

The next morning, he showed up on my junk boat - back to being the charming, effervescent, fun-loving Bridge I pegged him to be. There was a moment of sheepishness about the previous night's events but that's just what it was - a moment, nothing more. I was quadruply impressed with his radical resilience. Had I been in his place, I would have locked me up to wallow in a putrid pool of self-pity. And I don't need nobody's help locking me on to some shiny, new bike pedal, either!

He was sent to Hong Kong as "Elder Hudson," way before gay Mormon missionaries got to be kinda cool. He learned Cantonese as a function of his mission.

"Jonathan," he smilingly introduced himself to me.

"Jo-Na-Than..." I counted in my head. Three syllables. It evoked images of crusty, old, Hebrew dudes - the kind that spoke to burning bushes or stroke pestilence upon a nation. "Middle name?" I asked hopefully.

"Bridge," he exhaled, the 'b' and 'r' consonants purring into a languid, palate-caressing 'idge.'

I was hypnotized.

"Jonathan Bridge. You can call me Jonathan. Or Bridge - I don't really mind..." he must have gone on for quite a bit, as though he needed to reassure me that it's really, really, really OK for me to call him anything.

Bridge.

It wasn't just exhalation; it was a sigh.

"I like it," I announced to no one in particular. Suddenly, I was inspired to compose his profile on Mr Gay HK's online voting page.

By the time he got up to the microphone to say why he should be the next Mr Gay HK, any edge of an accent had been sandpapered into fluid facility of the language. There could not have been a more incongruent sound to come from a young, six-foot-plus, strawberry blonde stunner. He won the audience over that very instant. He takes to the stage well, I thought, like he had been doing it for years. Any image of Elder Hudson had been effectively flushed from my memory bank.

After Mr Gay HK, Bridge and I kept in touch in my capacity as a marketing and PR clown. He edited the English edition of a tourist publication. He fit so well with media types, I thought then. Articulate, able to express opinions that people understand and relate with, honest, but sweet and nice.

He did some modeling, too, which seemed to get a lot busier the more he hung out with the party set. Could he be the gay Paris Hilton of Hong Kong? Someone who strike people as a ditz - until they find out about her hit single, a best selling line of perfumes, and the fact that she gets paid to party. Isn't that funny (category: annoying)?

I saw a different side of Bridge through my dear friend, Angie, a devoted vegan brainiac who blogs, models, produces films, and is an all-around poster girl for alternative lifestyles. Bridge got along famously with that feel-good, self-loving, hippie, New Age-y crowd, too. Not long after, he had completed the kilometric paperwork attached to adopting an abandoned puppy.

I don't any more remember how we got talking about him taking me on as a client. I don't even remember how he got started as a fitness trainer, much less why. He's just a chameleon. And he's everywhere, all at once. And at some point, the omnipresent chameleon must have happily traded his editor's pen for a... a pair of tights!?

The tights had reflectors on them, too.

I was in XYZ, a sex-tastic spin studio that's still so secret-secret at the moment, even Google's search lips are sealed. Bridge was doing his first class as a spin instructor, with real-people students other than his fellow fitness fem-bots.

I died.

Funny (category: strange) that I was extra-lucid in death, like I was experiencing everything with heightened awareness.

That's the nature of punishment, I philosophized. It makes you huff and puff and suffer. It causes your calves to cramp up. Escape is hopeless; your feet are locked in. Meanwhile, in front of you, Elder Jonathan Bridge Hudson is bathed in a heavenly glow of strobes and gobbos. Instead of verses from the Book of Solomon, he spewed remixes from the songbook of Mariah. I closed my eyes, promptly sending my entire body hurtling through a supercharged Fat Burn hallucination. How could it be that my feet were still moving, and together with the down beat, too, just like Elder Hudson said?! Holyfuckshit, I had turned into a machine!

I died.

"GURLIFUCKINGDIED!!!!" I shrieked after the class. My eyeballs were still vibrating from the intense exertion.

"But you got through it," Bridge pointed out helpfully, in that breathy, sing-song-y Bridge-y way of his. "And since you did this tonight, I promise we won't do legs tomorrow."

"Tomorrow" had me indulging in champagne facials (I swear I was with a client) before my scheduled training with Bridge. I texted to cancel. I was awash with remorse.

A few hours of pleasure, another lifetime in the fatties' penitentiary.

But who am I to complain? It's funny (category: unbelievable!) - last I checked, I had lost two inches off my waist and dropped to a size 'S' t-shirt at H&M.

If the J Bridge Crossing is on the path to skinny salvation, I'd be going down that road again.

And again.

And again.

ALANIS MORISSETTE // YOU OUGHTA KNOW (LIVE 1996)

 photo 7912d536-3730-4091-986d-ea84408b4c99_zpsc88423af.jpg
THE HYPERACTIVE GAY BOY™

We were supposed to go to Taipei.

It was Peter's birthday weekend, Tyler is in town for an internship and hadn't yet been to Taiwan, Greg deserved a little celebratory trip after closing a major deal, I was event-ed out of my skull... We were all eager for a bit of a break from our Hyperactive lives - we all needed it.

But Hong Kong has a funny way of clawing itself into any effort to try and leave it behind. As the date of our weekend getaway loomed ever closer, people's commitment to the trip also became more and more nebulous. Taipei suddenly seemed like such a massive commitment, we threw our hands up in collective exasperation until Greg said, "Let's just do Macau."

Emma immediately took control of travel arrangements (by default), trawling through a mind boggling array of bundled experiences in search of the best deal. She found a package that included return ferry, show tickets to House of Dancing Water, dessert at some newly opened sweets shop, and casino credits. Ems quickly figured out it would take a lifetime to get everyone's sign-off and simply booked for people who could commit right there and then.

I volunteered to sort out rooms at the Westin, remembering that it was tucked away from everything else. I didn't have Emma's take-the-bull-by-the-horns approach, though, and so was exchanging emails with Ada Chan, The Westin Macau's Director of Communications, up until the night before we were due to leave Hong Kong. It was hectic. I breathed a sigh of resignation after I clicked "Send" on the final email, keeping my fingers crossed we wouldn't have problems with checking in the next day.

I set three alarm clocks to ensure I'd be at the ferry terminal by 9am. I arrived on the dot.

I found Emma veritably draped across the entire length of the couch at Starbucks, holding space for the coterie of men who had deigned to keep her waiting. She rightly assumed we'd all be desperate for a caffeine fix. Peter was last to arrive, giving Greg, Allen and Ty just a second to bag their bagels to go before we made a mad dash towards Immigrations.

"You're soaked, babe," Emma frowned as she touched my sweater.

"Rain," I explained unnecessarily. "Didn't have an umbrella while I was waiting for a cab to get here; left my brolly at a shoot last night."

"Do you want to borrow a shirt?" Peter offered.

"Nah," I declined. "I planned my outfit carefully; changing my top would ruin the entire effect! Thanks anyway."

"You silly bugger," Emma scolded, "you don't wanna get sick. Get out of that sweater right now!"

Meekly, I did as I was told. I rejoined the gang just as passengers were being herded into the ferry. It was lurching on its berth from side to side.

"It's less bumpy in front," Greg promised. The ferry vibrated with the shrieks and shouts of hundreds of mainland Chinese tourists. We muscled our way towards our assigned seats on the second and third rows. Emma promptly popped a motion sickness tablet. I clapped my Zik by Phillippe Starck headphones on. Greg started reading. Peter had a bite of Allen's bagel. And we were off.

"Please keep the blinds down," an attendant admonished Peter, "it's not safe."

"How is it not safe?" Peter persisted. "I don't see how it makes a difference, whether or not the blinds are up."

"Actually," the attendant sidled closer, conspiratorially, "it's the mainland Chinese... they get all excited when the blinds are up. They leave their seats so they can take pics from the windows. They block the aisles. That's what makes it unsafe."

Peter then turned his attention elsewhere, asking me about my Sergio Mendes remixes.

The boat lurched even harder once we we were firmly in open waters, sending many passengers rushing towards vomit bags. It was better than a roller coaster ride. I took Magalenha's hand and disappeared into an electric sambadrome.

"Everything was silent all of a sudden," Emma recounted once we were in a cab towards Coloane. "All I could hear was the rustle of plastic. I opened my eyes to peek at what could possibly be making that noise while everyone struggled just to hold on to their seats. It was a woman... She was collecting vomit bags, cleaning up after everyone's mess."

"Protein spills," I smiled. "That's what we called it in Disney," I explained, "so parents needn't feel bad about their kids throwing up all over the place. We'd say 'Please mind the protein spill.'"

"What a job," Peter shook his head. "I can't imagine doing what that woman does for a living."

"More so, that someone has to do it," Emma pointed out.

We were quiet the rest of the way towards the Westin. It took a woman who cleans up after other people's vomit to put our weekend getaway into perspective. No matter how exhausted, exasperated or aggravated we get - no matter how hectic or rough life gets - it can't possibly be worse than what the ferry's cleaning lady has to endure on a daily basis.

Our cab finally rolled onto the Westin's driveway a few minutes later, giving us a sweeping view of Hac Sa Beach. Bellhops rushed to assist and greet us a sunshiny "Welcome to The Westin Macau!" - in decidedly Filipino accents, of course.

Yes.

Macau.

That's right - that's where we are.

We have arrived.

Hong Kong is a clingy, crazy, jealous, infectious, dangerous and ultimately irresistible lover. Kinda like the singer's persona in this song. I swear I saw some of my companions surreptitiously check their email even while we were surrounded, distracted, entertained and humored by the best Macau has to offer.

I love that Alanis Morissette understands the role of performance in a singer-songwriter's bag of tricks. This rendition is a dramatic departure from the recorded version, which is pumped with more angst than an entire commune of starving artists can ever muster.

For the Grammy's, she humanizes the song's angry bitch by underscoring loss, denial, pain, suffering, and - up to the very end - her somewhat tragic plea for things to return to how they were before.

You can't let go of Hong Kong.

And Hong Kong is never letting go of you.

You oughta know.

// And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know! //
