HK Magazine Turns 20 + Wooloomooloo Prime

Hello, Friends!

My first encounter with HK Magazine was whilst I was shaving, in apartment 7B, Greenfield Gardens, Tsing Yi. Where is that? Exactly. Nowhere. But, I was still just a Disney Twink back then, dutifully saving money so I can purchase a house on a patch of land for my family in the Philippines. I had to live Nowhere coz flats in Central were so damn 'spensive. Besides, I needed to save so I'd have more cash to burn for Hong Kong's infamously exorbitant cocktails.

So anyway, I was shaving, reading about goings-on, getting myself ready for a night out on the town. Shit, I was hyperactive even back then, juggling too many things at once. And HK Magazine was right there with me, so yeah, in the last six years, I pretty much grew up with HK Magazine. I was reading Johannes Pong before Johannes Pong even knew I existed.

When my friend, Greg, who runs HK Mag and other titles under the Asia City Media Group, mentioned that they're in the process of selecting 20 past covers to reproduce in commemoration of the magazine's 20th anniversary, one cover instantly leaped to my memory.

"How To Peel A Pomelo was good," I blurted. "It's so HK Mag, honestly," I argued, "funny, random, but inherently helpful."

And so my favourite cover made it onto the shortlist - and lo and behold - it actually made the final 20.

Hey, HK! I'm kinda claiming this cover as mine, 'mkay?

After the event, we headed off for dinner at the swish Wooloomooloo Prime, where the hostess was swift with providing me a blanket when I blurted that it was too darn cold. Hey, I'm from the Philippines. We freeze when the temperature dips lower than 32 degrees!

The amiable General Manager, Lloyd, came by to say hello to us because we were obviously loud and high maintenance, so it was good to make friends with us from the get-go to ensure that the dinner goes smoothly.

Kidding.

Cocktails were good, view is a killer, service is terrific and price, well, Wooloomooloo Prime is hardly Tsui Wah. We paid HKD900 a head for a starter, a main dish and drinks. I had oysters and half a chicken, which was plenty. And the fries were awesome. And Lloyd got us one more round of drinks on the house.

Thanks to Lloyd and his fantastic team!

With Affection,
James
