Il Meglio, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

Hello, Friends!

Nothing beats people-watching during one's lunch break, honestly. Present company excluded (who happened to be my good friend, Michael, who really should be gay because he's just so darn dishy!), I throughly enjoyed watching swarthy delivery boys make their rounds throughout Knustford Terrace. Muscles rippling whilst pushing trolleys piled high with meats and/or alcohol? Yum, please pass the bread.

So, my vantage point was Il Meglio, a restaurant along Knutsford Terrace which bills itself "Ristorante di Venezia." Now, I've never been to Venice because - duh! - what if the entire city sinks under my weight whilst I'm visiting? I'll be traumatized for life! But I've been to The Venetian Macao, so does that count?

Anyhow, Michael and I thought we'd try it out, and it was OK, honestly! The outdoor seating area is shaded by a leafy canopy, service is smart and unobtrusive, bread was hot and inoffensive - so yeah, it was fine.

Squid

I had a portobello salad to start whilst Michael had squid "blasted with garlic," and honestly, I just like anything that's blasted, anyway! Both starters were fine. Just as I had anticipated, I liked Michael's squid better than my mushrooms, which I found really gummy and sour.

Michael's chicken soup was nicer, too, coz my mushroom soup was just glue-y. At this point, I was wondering whether I just have food envy, anyway. You know, the next plate always tastes better than yours... But then our mains came, and my spring chicken - "Nice skin," Michael said - was rubbery and his halibut was just so silky, my eyes literally rolled to the back of my head.

I just didn't have good luck with my orders, I finally decided. Or, my tongue might just have been still dysfunctional from the hedonistic alcohol consumption last Friday night - and that's really the most possible and fair explanation, honestly!

The 3-course lunch came to about HKD150 each, I guess, including service charge. Michael paid, so it felt like some sort of a date, and I really dislike paying attention to the damage when someone else offers to pay. I prefer to not know. It's only polite.

So, big hugs and thanks to my lunch escort, and to the nice staff at Il Meglio, who took wonderful care of us!

Now, if only I could get Chris to book Venice for our honeymoon...

With Affection,
James
