Hello, Friends!
I almost died when I was invited to be the MC for Salon de Ning's Open Mic Night on 26 October at The Peninsula Hong Kong.
The Pen is obvs supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. It's a fixture on both TRAVEL + LEISURE's and Condé Nast Traveler's yearly world's best lists, amongst others. It's superlative in every way, but also so stylish and discreet.
So it was a thrill to have been able to present myself as The Hyperactive Gay Boy™ at a non-gay event - at The Pen, no less. Hyperactive has gone legit, natch.
Kudos to Eli Homawoo, Salon de Ning's stunning doyenne, for providing an opportunity for aspiring singers to expose their talent in a tony venue, backed up by a topnotch band.
Hyperactive sings "For Once in My Life." Really. |
If being a starving artist is your present reality, darling, you might as well be a starving artist who gets 5 minutes of fame at The Pen. Take it from me; I speak from experience. I performed at the Open Mic last August. I just got an extension on my 5 minutes by being the show's MC two months later.

Next Open Mic Night is on 30 November. It happens every last Wednesday of the month.
Performers get complimentary drinks all night, fans get comp shooters, plus The Pen's giving away awesome prizes for the winners. And since this is a town where a Lucky Draw is de rigueur at every event, guests also get a chance to win prizes. Just for showing up. Isn't that so fun?
Speaking of prizes, my "prize" for having MC'd the event is a 5-course dinner for two with a bottle of champers at Felix - The Pen's iconic restaurant + bar designed by Philippe Starck.
Heartfelt, Hyperactive gratitude to Team Pen!
With Affection,
James
