AVANT G'ART, Kee Club

Photobucket

Hello, Friends!

It's arguably the most ambitious event in the Pink Season, not least because it's held at Kee, one of Hong Kong's most venerable private members' club. And as if to hammer down the point, this one is subtitled "Out of Control."

AVANT G'ART
brings together high fashion, performance art, and artefacts of Hong Kong's queer culture. It's a club event that aspires towards (what else?) the avant garde, of course! The event on 22 October featured a Lanvin fashion show, a contortionist, a solo contemporary dancer, a Kazaky-esque dance group, and the artist Michael Lam, who used the bodies of walkaround models as his canvas.

AVANT G'ART was so rich with content, it provided non-stop multisensory stimulation the moment you stepped into Kee.

What's more, AVANT G'ART raised funds for meaningful community endeavors such as AIDS Concern and the HK Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.

Jimmy Wong was there in his first official appearance as the new Mr Gay Hong Kong. Jimmy's signature mohawk was an easy, perfect fit for AVANT G'ART. 1st Runner-up Bridge Hudson (who threatened to show up in an avant garde spin of "weekend gay shorts") and 2nd Runner-up Edmund Lee were also present.

The night was a joyous explosion of paint and fabric and music and laughter. And in the middle of it all was Marc-David, my dear friend who runs Kee Club, dressed as a jester. Marc-David accomplished an incredible amount of work to create a visionary event that is as audacious in its ambition as it is complete in its execution.

All bases were covered.

Thanks for having us, Marc-David!

Brava, AVANT G'ART!

With Affection,
James

KEE Club has lost its edge. The members are always the same middle aged people and when they have a non members night to bring in some $ from Beijing Club or Basement, the door policy is confusing and Marc David the manager couldn't explain it without a rude word. You really wouldn't expect somebody with his police manners to work at Kee. So next we're bringing guests events and everything over to SEVVA! Or Socialito, so much friendlier!

sevva is cooler and happier than kee club because of their management and in the end isn't it all about philosophy. we've been to both many times and one really feels monitored and scrutinized at kee club by the staff not least by marc david nathan mentioned above, and this after 'making it' through the door. given the small space of kee and that it's a members only club, seeing the same members faces and fake smiles of mr nathan got boring. yes he is a bit of kill joy and an a kisser.
