New Beginnings: Aqua & Volume BEAT

Hello, Friends!

Last night after a packed show at the Cultural Centre, we decided to check out the renovated Aqua.

Chris and I were on a triple date with Abby and Betty and Bono and Jeff.

Aqua's peerless GM, my dearest friend Simon J McKinless, was at the reception to greet us hello. We were quickly ushered into a corner table that had a magnificent view of Hong Kong's iconic, densely packed skyline. A bottle of Louis Roederer was popped, then two... Some snobbish sushi arrived, then some equally snobbish pizza, then some teriyaki chicken skewers like you'd simply never find on any roadside eatery.

We love the new Aqua flagship. Warm ecru and amber and mahogany. In a day and age of shameless bling, Aqua is a high temple of hushed, discreet, understated glam. Once again, ahead of the curve. Brava!

After Aqua, Chris and I trekked to still-closed Volume BEAT to wish Joseph Chan, one of its affable owners, a very happy birthday.

The new club has a beautiful flow to it, an excellent variety of social environments (VIP, bar, cocktail tables, outdoor smoking area) for every mood and motion.

Joseph wasted no time in showing off his new toys - the club's hyperactive gobbo lights.

Evan, Joseph's business partner, then pointed out the jumbotron, the aquarium, and the DJ booth - the last remaining vestige of the old Volume. It's important to have something from the old, I thought, to give the brand some semblance of continuity.

Happy, happy birthday, Joseph!

Volume BEAT opens tonight.

With Affection,
