SWISSOTEL KUNSHAN

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

Friday night.

We took the train from Shanghai to Kunshan. We wish we had known that there'd only be one taxi queue at the Kunshan train station - and that everyone in China would be waiting for a cab.

Luckily there were private car owners working the queue, haggling with commuters on price at which said private cars could go now. Our guy wanted to charge us RMB50 each. We felt like we had to bargain in order to pay due respect to local culture. Our guy finally settled at RMB40 per passenger. We happily left the queue and proceeded to squeeze into his car, together with a mother-and-son and one other guy.

Within half an hour, we were at the Swissotel Kunshan.

The concierge would later inform us helpfully that we would have paid just RMB15 on the taxi metre, had we had the patience to wait.

We unpacked, grabbed a book and headed over to the Crystal Bar for a welcome-to-Kunshan drink. Chris had a beer whilst looking online for tourist-y things to do in the city; we enjoyed an apple martini whilst thumbing through a detective novel. We could feel a cold coming. 10 degrees. Instant change of weather. Tropical creatures such as ourselves tend to not do well in temperatures colder than 29 degrees.

There are worse places to be stuck in than the Swissotel when one has a cold. We spent the entire Saturday in bed, recovering. The bed was delicious. Room service, even more so. Chris could have exercised in-room, too, had he wished it. Pilates ring, Swiss ball, theraband, name it - it's available. But Chris would later report that the gym was well equipped with treadmills and bikes and all sorts of equipment we haven't seen / touched in years - so that's fine. As long as he's happy.

Thank goodness for Swiss hospitality.

COME FLY WITH ME

james gannaban
NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THE QUARKIE VIPERS...

We love Hong Kong. Work is here. Friends are here. Chris is here. Our life - and how we've come to define our Hyperactive existence - is here.

Yet - because of its sheer intensity - doesn't there come a time when the city gets the better of you? Makes you feel like you wanna jump out of your skin? Like you wanna get out? Escape?

That's exactly what we did last weekend.

We finally heeded a long-standing invitation to visit the Swissotel property in Kunshan.

To be honest, we know nothing about Kunshan. Zilch. We didn't know if we were gonna see a big, bustling city or a big, sprawling panda reserve. We didn't even research beyond a cursory look-see on Wikipedia. Frankly, we didn't care.

All we had to know was our flight schedule.

And away we went.

CRUISING BEIJING

THE OPPOSITE HOUSE BEIJING Photobucket nali patio the village beijing

Aside of course from the obvious - swanky retail enclave The Village - and the not-so-obvious (A Li'l High, anyone?), The Opposite House's neighbouring streets and alleys offer plenty of charm.

WHAT ELSE?

"How about some champagne?" Alex suggested.

Duh - like he needed to ask twice! Gay boys and champagne go together like a horse and carriage. OK, that totally made no sense, but who cares?

We were in Mesh, The Opposite House's achingly stylish bar. A bartender poured some Champagne Duval-Leroy ("My favourite," Alex solemnly swore) for myself, Alex, Enwei and and Kevin, an old friend of Chris's. Meanhwile, we munched on mealy crackers and nuts coated in a savoury, syrupy sauce. The champagne's crisp structure, gorgeously creamy on the palate, beautifully balanced the richness of the bar nibbles.

"You have to try the salmon martini," Enwei insisted.

I almost spewed bubbly out of my nostrils. What?!

WHAT OTHER OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD DRINK AM I MEANT TO TRY, NOW?

"Would you like a breakfast martini?"

And with that, Alex Chen, The Opposite House's Director of PR, introduced himself to Hyperactive. It was love at first sight. It helped, of course, that Alex was wearing a tight-fit emerald green polo shirt and short shorts.

How much better can a Saturday morning proceed?

It was a photo finish to make my Dragonair flight out of Hong Kong bound for Beijing. I had two last-minute meetings that had me minding my wristwatch for fear I might miss cut-off time for check-in. I was so anxious, I thought I'd pee myself. Not a good look. So I held it all in and smiled through crisis management.

Thank goodness my Marco Polo card seemed to work wonders. I was a hot minute behind check-in cut-off, but I still managed to nail a front row-aisle seat on a packed flight. Sweet.

To my surprise, the flight was pretty awesome. Blanket, wine, 3-course meal, in-flight entertainment (Snow White and the Huntsman). I had always assumed Dragonair to be Cathay's budget cousin, and so I received anything "extra" with great pleasure.

Since it was a Friday night, there was an extra-manic mad dash to make it out of the gate before anyone else. I was first.

And there was a beautiful twink waiting for me, with my name on a placard.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
