WINNIE . DIANA . CARRIE

This silver screen will be dripping with so much estrogen this coming fall, I'm tempted to check if I might accidentally acquire a set of ovaries purely by osmosis. I'm reminded what it was like to grow up with three sisters. I could never beat them. So I joined them!

I haven't been this excited about movies since 1998, when Cate, Meryl and Gwyneth came out with ElizabethOne True Thing and Shakespeare in Love, respectively.

This year we've got Jennifer Hudson as Winnie Mandela, Naomi Watts as Diana and Chloe Moretz as Carrie. Isn't that lineup just so breathtaking?? I just had to see the trailers to get an idea of how 2013's Triumvirate stacks up against the 1998's Trinity.

Ready?

J.Hud's Winnie Mandela biopic finally hits US cinemas on September 6. Filmed in 2010 and premiered in 2011, it received weak reception at the Toronto International Film Festival. Perhaps the producers were fearful that Torontonians' apathy about the apartheid would doom the film to Razzies infamy instead of toward Oscars glory. Perhaps they felt like two years was enough time to leave the film out to dry, effectively clearing the stench of rotten tomatoes off the celluloid - who knows?!

I have loved J.Hud from the moment she covered Ms. Barry Manilow's Weekend in New England on Idol. I staunchly defended her, even through that disastrous episode with an ill-fitting and badly proportioned Oscar de la Renta metallic python bolero. Meanwhile, is there anything about "metallic python bolero" that sounds right?

If the trailer is meant to whet your appetite for the main course, I'm just not hungry any more. Maybe it's Jenny Craig, maybe it's J Bridge. Whatever it is, I have a sinking feeling that Winnie Mandela is a nightmare, not a dream. J.Hud seems unable to deliver her lines smoothly, watch. Something is innately problematic about the script. It's a bad script!! Every line in the trailer sounds like it might have come from another revolution movie, it's unbearable!

If there's any measure of comfort for J.Hud's fans, it's that the camera clearly loves her. At the very least, she looks as gorgeous as ever.

That's all.

Good for you, Naomi Watts, for finally looking like you're ready to step away from the long shadows of Nicole Kidman, Jodie Foster and Kylie Minogue! Gurl, you look like every blonde chick I ever saw - I'd never be able to place your face or your name to save my life!

With Diana, Hollywood's go-to blonde for every horror movie ever made (including The Ring, King Kong and the superlatively nightmarish J. Edgar) just might snag her first Oscar statuette. Watts parlays decades' worth of experience in horror flicks towards creating an eerily perfect mirror image of the late Princess of Wales. Makes you wonder if Watts made a deal with Diana's spirit to temporarily inhabit her body for as long as filming required it, so they could star in the biopic "together."

Diana was so well photographed, there'd be hell to pay if an actor screwed up her character study. Many actors consider it intimidating not to have artistic license over a character, or with a character's journey.  In Diana's case, there's very little leeway for invention, interpretation and improvisation. Simply, playing Diana is all about re-creation. And response - that is what the actor who plays Diana must contribute. A truthful moment-to-moment response. She's an archetype! It's not that hard to play her!

Thankfully, Watts captures every minute detail with effortless perfection - especially the deep, dark, desperate, reserved, rebellious and resigned sadness we all saw in Diana's eyes.

In all honesty, though? I'm most excited about finally watching a dramatization of Diana's affairs. She clearly had a thing for swarthy men of South-Asian / Middle Eastern descent! Good for her - she liked her men with a bit more flava.

Confession!

I don't really give a fuck about Chloe Moretz; who is she?

But OMG - Julianne Fucking Moore? Hellz, yeah!

MAN OF STEEL

henry-cavill-superman-man-of-steel photo IMG_5949_zps0194fcde.jpg
CLARK KENT AS A HAIRY DADDY.

I happily tucked into the first few minutes of Man of Steel, thinking I had walked into screening of a Colt Studio classic, instead. The opening scene seethed with testosterone. Water, fire, catastrophe! Danger everywhere! No damsel in distress in sight! The protagonist was referred to only as "Greenhorn," and he's half naked and wet and hairy and muscly and intense and...

...and then Russell Crowe reaches in between his wife's legs to retrieve a baby. I snap back to reality, reluctantly letting go of the squished spicy sausage roll that, up to that moment, I hadn't realize I was clenching.

There's loads to like about this movie.

First, it's redemption for Crowe. We're reminded once again why Crowe is so revered, his inability to sing was overlooked in a calamitous outing as Javert in Tom Hooper's Les Miserables. The camera loves Russell Crowe. Those dolorous eyes, those split-second facial twitches, the mumbling... he doesn't have to do much. His mere presence on a frame makes every epic story ever written believable. He proves that here, over and over again, as we're "treated" to lines that would make us barf, had they were delivered by a lesser thespian:  “You’ll give the people an ideal to strive toward. They will race behind you. They will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun.”

In addition to Crowe, the supporting cast's marquee value is enough to make anyone swoon. Amy Adams as Lois Lane delivers a stunning performance in a movie more likely to be remembered for the stunning number of buildings it flattened on Planet Earth (with zero human casualty, if we were indeed to suspend disbelief). She's relentlessly feisty, spicy, sexy whilst never losing her cool. She's also likable, which is a feat all its own. With a Pulitzer and that man - Superman! - wrapped around her fingers, we'd be hatin' on Lois Lane all day.

Laurence Fishburn is awesome and can do no wrong. Kevin Costner - OMG. I thought Waterworld's spectacular failure would have killed his career, for sure. But here he is, still inexplicably magnetic even without a jawline. Diane Lane - fuck, yeah! Same thing as Kevin Costner - inexplicably smoldering even underneath frumpy farm clothes and really bad wigs. And poor Michael Shannon did his best with the cards he was dealt with: clunky costume design, really distracting hair, and a comical death scene (Superman twists his neck). What troopers, this lot are, for realizing that swallowing one's pride is a small price to pay when considering the large paydays they're bound to have as parts of this franchise reboot.

And what of Henry Cavill, who plays the titular character?

"Superman is so hot!" my bestie, Tricia, texted me yesterday.

Clark Kent looking like a Colt god - that's proper hot. Superman looking like an aging BelAmi alumnus - that is proper not. At some point, I even felt like the producers put in greater effort towards ensuring Superman's hair looked more perfect as the movie progressed, than they did towards production design, editing, color treatment... This reboot fell short in creating a distinct look and feel. It's a shame. Planet Krypton looks like every other intergalactic wasteland we've already seen before, but with more disappointing costumes. This coming Halloween, little boys would sooner dress up as Lois Lane than they would as General Zod; he's just not cool enough.

Luckily, Henry Cavill is big enough (literally, physically) to carry this movie all the way through to the end. I might have Hyperactive gripes, but I can't deny, either, that he does look like Superman. This reboot either flies or falls on that alone. We can wax poetic all day about the how this origin of movie evokes Malick-esque auteurial magery and a Nolan-esque look into the darkness of the soul. But in the end, it's just entertainment. I even stood up to clap in sheer delight after Lois Lane delivered the movie's unexpected, punchy final line:

"Welcome to the Planet."

The Diva Video Of The Day™ Diana King / Shy Guy (OST Bad Boys II)

I know that I'll be bored with my own company soon enough. But for now, I am finding new ways to enjoy having a space just for myself.

I may now play music in the morning without having to put my headphones on.

I also realized I don't have to open all the windows when I'm cooking adobo. I can trap the delicious, garlicky aroma inside the flat if I so wish.

I may altogether avoid watching "important" films, such as Memento or Lincoln or The Master. I may watch one silly 90s action movie after another, full volume, until my Hyperactive brain is fried. Oops. Too late. Brain's already burnt to a crisp.

Why aren't there any more movies like Bad Boys, where everything explodes?

Why aren't there more genre-defying pop ditties like Shy Guy?

The Diva Video Of The Day™ Ella Fitzgerald / Get Thee Behind Me Satan (The Master OST)

I couldn't fucking believe my ears when I first heard the lyrics of this song whilst Chris, Caro and I were watching The Master last night.

The movie was horrid - there was nothing about it I could relate to except the weirdly beautiful, dusty landscapes, which reminded me of Tuguegarao. But then again, I haven't really experienced extreme trauma (although having been grossly overweight comes pretty darn close) or been a member of a cult (having been raised Catholic - and gay! - doesn't count).

So anyway, the movie was awful. But this song - awesome. I'm trying to avoid stating the obvious, which is if you're gay and you're called Satan, I probably do want you to get behind me. But as the song goes, I want to resist. So I won't say it.

It was probably my and Chris' last movie date til God-knows-when. On the one hand, it sucks that the movie sucked so much. On the other hand, it was nice to fall asleep on Chris' shoulder.

FOR THE WRETCHED OF THE EARTH

hugh jackman les miserables
DON'T YOU JUST LOVE HOW HUGH JACKMAN THROWS HIS HIP TO THE RIGHT AND LOOKS OVER HIS SHOULDER, AS THOUGH WONDERING WHETHER WE LIKE HIS BACKSIDE?

WE DO.
hugh jackman les miserables
OF COURSE WE LOVE HIS FRONT BITS JUST AS MUCH,
IF NOT MORE.

I would so do Hugh Jackman. And as a living, breathing carnivore, can you blame me? The man has more beef than Tesco's. That alone is enough reason for any self-respecting homosexual to brave the epic 3 hours it takes for this film to take its course. Even more so when Hugh Jackman starts to sing, "Look down! Look down!" Sir, yes, sir!

That having been said, I was disappointed by the film.

Before I get stoned to death, hear me out.

Yes, Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean gets drenched with water in the opening scene and we see him power lifting a thick pole amongst equally muscular inmates, etc. So honestly, within the first few minutes, I felt like I already got my money's worth. But Russel Crowe as Javert is just a buzzkill! First of all, Crowe looks more like an aging accountant than a menacing law enforcer. Do the filmmakers honestly expect me to suspend disbelief that this squat figure wearing a funny hat is enough of a threat to someone as physically imposing as Jackmantasy? And even though I'm familiar with the book and the musical, the film, as a visual medium, should rightfully be able to stand on its own. Every time I see Crowe and Jackmantasy together, I wanna weep, giggle and gag - all at the same time. The multi-layered conflict (moral, spiritual, legal, blah blah blah) between Crow's Javert and Jackmantasy's Valjean is at the crux of Les Miserables. It's so important, they sang lots of songs about it!

And then Crowe starts to "sing." I wonder - did he do animal exercises when he was getting into his role? I could just imagine him and his beautiful mind, in rehearsal mode: "I am Javert. Javert is a watchful bird. Javert is a... a... Crowe?! A crow!!! Caw caw caw!"

Anne Hathaway as Fantine is gorgeous even with a patchy head and a bleeding mouth. But I found it difficult to get past the obtrusive make-up. It was flat-out clownish - and this is way before "Master of the House." I appreciate the need for grit, but must everything be so overstated whilst the singing is all so... understated? Underwhelming! At this point, I question whether this is still Les Miserables or Waiting for Godot... Is there any salvation for the wretched of the earth, i.e. the poor Les Miz nerds like myself who are trapped into waiting, waiting for this movie to get better?

Amanda Seyfried as Cosette trills thinly through "A Heart Full of Love;" Samantha Barks as Eponine shockingly lacks the awareness to turn her face towards the camera during key passages in "On My Own;" Freddie Redmayne's (Marius) chin vibrates alarmingly throughout "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables," leaving me scared that his jaw might fly out of the screen and into the audience. The filmmakers might as well have cast Nick Jonas in all the roles!

The only saving grace of this film is Colm Wilkinson as the Bishop of Digne, who needs to do nothing more than be onscreen for me to start cheering, weeping, hugging myself, etc. Wilkinson's passion, certitude and quiet grace only served to highlight the shortcomings of the celebrity cast, and how unnecessarily busy the entire film was. Honestly, did we really need each shot to pan out vertically and into the stratosphere?? Is this Les Miz or X-Men?

Hugh Jackman should have just been shirtless the entire time.

DISCRIMINATION

james gannabanjames gannabanjames gannabanjames gannabanjames gannaban

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of having been in a movie set.

It was a shoot for a shortie, made to escalate the oft-ignored issue of workplace gender discrimination against lesbians, gays, transexuals and bisexuals.

I played Richard, a cancer sufferer who is partnered with a closeted guy who fails to visit me in the hospital. He is not out for fear of retribution in the workplace. His colleagues are bullies who don't accept sexual minorities.

I die.

It's all very bleak.

But in truth, such is life.

People are scared of things or situations which they're not familiar with. And sexual minority is unfortunately one of those things.

So whilst I'm sitting here, ensconced in a powerful online environment where everything is tolerated - welcomed, even, for the sake of being different - the truth is much harder to digest.

Most of us are still pretty much ignorant about sexual minorities.

It's time for a change.
