IS THIS WHERE ALL OF SEOUL'S TOPS HANG OUT?
OR IS THIS JUST A CLEVER PLOY TO GET THE BOTTOMS IN?

Itaewon is apparently considered seedy. I could have been fooled. I felt right at home. But maybe that's coz I'm a trash bag.

The neighbourhood is home to many of Seoul's Muslims, its hookers and the homos. Why and how the three groups came together in that specific area, I can only guess.

A row of old, cement buildings line the main drag. The structures are clearly ancient, but the shops that now occupy them have made the effort to spruce things up a bit. Fake Goyards are sold on the pavement in front of an expensive French bakery. Koreans have a flawless sense of irony.

There are cafes of course, the obligatory Irish pub, a German beer bar, a couple of restaurants by gay Korean celeb Hong Seok-cheon (more about that on another entry) and a few kebab-erias. I walked along all these with little notice because my destination was Homo Hill.

It was dead.

There was no sign of life, except a guy peeing against an electrical post. How... primitive! I instantly fell in love. I had the entire gay village all to myself.

Homo Hill is a steep and narrow alley that's parallel to Hooker Hill. You'll know Hooker Hill immediately; the biggest night club is called Rio but the hookers inside are Russian, not Brazilian. This is all made clear on the club's signage.

At 5pm, none of the bars have so much as moved a stool or switched on a light bulb. Why is Happy Hour not de rigeur here?!

I can only imagine how this place heaves when the homos and the hookers finally get their lazy asses off the bed to do some real werq on the meanest streets of Seoul. The Muslims - they were awake.

SHAKING MY BRACELETS AT THIS TOWN

Yesterday was a whirlwind of Hyperactivity.

It was Charmaine's last day at work before her big Thailand birthday holiday and so Running and I had a few bits and bobs to take over. In the afternoon, I brought the girls to the Ospitalita Italiana awarding at DiVino Patio in Brim 28, where we met - surprise, surprise - a lot of Italians.

"I feel like I'm in a mafia movie" Charmaine whispered.

"Beautiful shoes," Running mumbled, eyeing a pair of Ferragamos on a lady representing award winning restaurant The Mistral in the Intercontinental Grand Standford.

We proceeded to Hooray  at the World Trade Center afterwards to suss the place out for an event, then to an accessories sale at APM Monaco on Duddell Street. Finally, I had to MC the Grand Opening of Nigar Qureshi's Spa BPZ on Sea Bird Tower - rubbing shoulders with the city's Indian glitterati, natch.

Later on in the night, Chris cooked steak for dinner, after which we caught up with Caro to watch The Master in IFC.

Colour me Hyperactive!

Giorgio Armani's own exclusive nightclub where Milan's fashion crowd come to play, has now arrived in Hong Kong – following its success in Milan, Tokyo and Dubai. Hong Kong's Armani/Privé has two avant-garde faces - an up-beat lounge club where the gliteratti play late into the night to the latest DJ vibes, and a chill-out rooftop terrace with electric skyscraper city views.

HONI HONI
Named after a Polynesian greeting meaning “kiss kiss,” Honi Honi Cocktail Lounge is a veritable haven of elegance and design. In addition to what is arguably the most expansive list of rums ever seen, the menu includes the usual tiki suspects such as Pina Colada, as well as many novel creations such as the Maori Spring Punch, or Max’s personal favourite, Honi Honi Kiss.

PoHo (n.) a place.

Sheung Wan

Design studios, small galleries, charming cafes, lifestyle boutiques and concept outlets that sell stuff you'd never see in shopping malls.

Probably the most exciting non-mainstream commercial environment in Hong Kong today.

THANKS FOR LETTING US PLAY, IKA!

Ika Butoni is a study in contrasts. This reflects well in her designs.

There is a rigid discipline about her monochromatic outfit, but also bursts of joy in her colourful, stacked accessories. She is spare with her words but abundantly demonstrative with her tactile display of affection. She is earthy and real but also quite ethereal.

We met the designer of the eponymous design label by accident. We were strolling along the lanes of Miramall during its Grand Opening party and, whilst we were in front of Ika's boutique, Charmaine dragged us inside to meet Ika.

"Beautiful," we enthused, surveying the proudly Asian but decidedly global aesthetic to the artisanal items. The clothes have classic, timeless silhouettes but are intricately detailed with individually stitched strips of fabric or leather forming elaborate patterns. There are thick swirls of chiffon and joyful explosions of sequins and silver and stones.

Ika decided to let me wear an ostrich jacket - strips of leather held together by stretch mesh. Again, aesthetic tension. Juxtaposition of hard and soft, robotic and organic, red on black, structure and fluidity.

Ika Butoni is the founder of Bali Fashion Week.
